February 23, 2005Food A couple of food-related things to get things going. First of all Hsiao-Ching Chou wrote an article that made page F1 of today's Seattle Post-Intelligencer. First of all, I really liked the article. I've had plenty of opportunity to work with the press and let's just say that I've often experienced quite a gap between reality and how it gets reported.. That's not to say that its intentional, just that its really hard to write down some notes and get it all written down so that people who aren't involved can understand it (although sometimes I'm afraid I would have to attribute it to some degree of laziness). This article while not perfect does a damn good job capturing the whole tasting menu thing and I think a bunch of credit needs to go to Hsiao-Ching who spent a bunch of time with us to get the background for this story. I'll also have to say its especially cool that one of my photos was published (although unfortunately they don't appear to be in the online version). During the creation of our books I'm mostly taking notes / cooking, so my direct contribution to the "bits" in the books themselves is somewhat indirect. However I've spent a bunch of effort to hang in the background and take lots of "making of" pictures and some of them are in the article, including a big picture of Hillel cooking in my kitchen. Even cooler, there is a picture of the Foie-Gras stuffed Apples that I made during the test-cooking in the set of photos at the top of the article. I was originally in another one of the photos of us cooking at the "mystery" restaurant, but apparently they cropped me out. I didn't think I was that ugly? Yesterday Hillel launched the TasteEverything.org 2005 Independant Food Festival & Awards. I've been following this concept for a while as Hillel has been developing it, and I've got to say that it turned out way cooler than I was expecting. There are at least a dozen things listed that I can't wait to try. I'll probably get to some other ones first, but I'm most excited about perfecting a recipe for Satay as described in this article "The Reason I can't be a Vegitarian". I still need to work on the basics of this site. At the moment the look is just copied from my lancairtalk site. Oh well, lots of work to do.
February 18, 2005Web Site This is my first effort at setting up a personal web site. I think I used to have one back in 1996 but its been awhile. For now if you want to see something, go to lancairtalk.com.
