ATI HD 3800

Of course it looks like I jumped the gun a bit in some of my conclusions in my previous post about video cards. ATI also announced their new generation of cards, the HD 3800 and they look pretty impressive too. Of course at the moment it looks like a bit of a vaporware launch (to head off today’s NVidia announcements), with no benchmarks / details, but the real launch is less than 3 weeks away so it seems like a good time to wait a bit before deciding.

    It looks like me like ATi/AMD have admitted total failure with the HD2000 series, hence the rather speedy release of a HD3000 series. So… having seriously failed their loyal customers with the HD2000 series, are they just gonna blow more smoke up everyones arses about the HD3000 cards without any concrete evidence of performance?
    I used to be a loyal ATi user, until buying 2 x HD2900PRO’s for Crossfire. What a joke that was… 850Watt PSU minimum, and the performance gain was negligible.
    ATi’s product support this time around has been abysmal… where nVidia is looking after all their customers with BETA drivers and regular driver updates, it seems ATi is just sitting back and not fixing known hardware issues with their cards, instead letting everyone wait at least a month before giving them a new driver, often not fixing the problems we’re experiencing. For instance, ATi’s website claims that the 2900 chipset in Crossfire mode offers performance gains of upto 90%… yet not one of my games benefitted from the additional card. Instead I had a noisy, power hungry computer with very little brawn considering its hardware spec.
    So…. I cant imagine this 3000 series to be any type of improvement on this situation… as it’ll take ATi/AMD around 6 months to get the drivers right.. of course the 3DMark06 scores will be outstanding, since ATi seemingly spends 80% of its time tweaking the drivers to gain the record score on the benchmark, in hope this will drive up sales.
    DirectX 10.1…. ok show me how many DX10 games are out.
    By the time this DX10.1 will be the standard in games, the 3000 series will be long gone.
